Nanjing University, known as Nanda, is a major public university, the oldest institution of higher learning in Nanjing, Jiangsu, and a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese universities.
Established in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School, it underwent several name changes until it was renamed Nanjing University in 1950. It merged with the University of Nanking in 1952.
In addition to its membership in the C9 League, Nanjing University has been designated a Class A institution in the Double First-Class University Plan, a government initiative to cultivate an elite group of Chinese universities into "world-class" institutions. The university is perennially ranked one of China's best research universities and one of China's most selective universities. It is ranked among the top universities worldwide in major global university rankings.
It offers a range of multi-disciplinary courses in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and management.
In total, Nanjing has 21 schools running courses at undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels. The university has one of China’s largest libraries, holding more than 4.5 million volumes.
NJU has two main campuses: the Xianlin campus in the northeast of Nanjing and the Gulou campus in Nanjing.
